The Strongest Defense
Hurd FeelSafe impact windows are proving popular this hurricane season
MEDFORD, WI (31 July 2006) - Consider it a variation of the perfect storm. Builders and remodelers are racing against Mother Nature to rebuild areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina. This years' hurricane season began June 1 and officials say there's an 80 percent chance this season will be stormier than normal. Such severe weather has builders and homeowners alike searching for a strong defense. A record number have requested information on Hurd FeelSafe impact windows.
Hurd FeelSafe windows provide some of the highest DP-ratings available and are one of the few windows strong enough for second-story corners in coastal regions. The windows were the fourth most requested product in Building Products magazine. It is the first time a wood window has ever been listed in the Top 100.
"The Top 100 Products are among the hottest products for today's new and remodeled homes," said Jean Dimeo, editor-in-chief of Building Products magazine. "Windows typically don't break into the list simply because builders and remodelers know a lot about them already. We assume Hurd's high ranking reflects a severe storm season combined with the realization such impact products exist."
For comparison, Hurd FeelSafe windows are 25-40 percent stronger than a standard window. The entire window is constructed for impact versus other windows made with just impact glass. With Hurd FeelSafe windows, the sash and frame construction is a combination of "beefy" wood profiles covered with extruded aluminum exterior profiles. The glass is high-strength, shatter-resistant laminated glass combined with the latest technology in impact resistant inter-layers. The entire window is available with DP ratings ranging from +50/-65 to +80/-80, with the newest casement product meeting a +65/-85. This means the window is proven to withstand Category IV winds as well as flying debris.
"Builders have been impressed with our DP numbers, not realizing just how strong a big window can be," said Joe Herman, Hurd vice president of sales and marketing. "Our engineering department designed Hurd FeelSafe for impact. We made strength adjustments in the actual frame construction as well as with the glass. We've been impressed with the results but it's more rewarding to hear that builders and remodelers are anxious to learn more."
In addition to strength, Hurd FeelSafe insulated windows are energy-efficient and have achieved Energy Star rating. With the popularity of large picture windows soaring, homeowners are searching for windows that can protect them from all types of weather, be it storms, sun or cold.
Hurd FeelSafe is available in a variety of casement, awning, fixed and single-hung products and are offered in various sizes and shapes. Hurd also makes a FeelSafe outswing patio door to compliment the already impressive window line.
