We think perfection is a journey. It's something we strive for every day in every product we make. And even though we may never achieve absolute perfection, the quest for it has given our Hurd family a tremendous amount of pride and satisfaction. MEDFORD, WI (11 January 2006) - December marks one year since Monarch Holdings Inc. (MHI) purchased Hurd Windows & Doors. Since then, MHI has invested heavily in Hurd, purchasing innovative machinery and supporting an aggressive marketing campaign. Along with three other business units, MHI is a growth-oriented holding company focused on marketing and manufacturing. The company, headquartered in Waukee, IA, employs over 1,100 people at 10 facilities across the U.S.
While MHIs current portfolio of operating companies is concentrated in the residential construction industry, future acquisitions may be in other industries. The company's business philosophy is to create value by holding companies for long-term growth. Consequently, MHI promotes independence and autonomy. The result is superior products, employee retention, greater customer connectivity and faster response to market needs and opportunities.
"Our business philosophy is one of continuous improvement of products, manufacturing processes and overall company operations," said David. S. Mulcahy, sole owner of the privately held MHI. "Hurd is a prime example of that philosophy in action. Prior to our purchase, Hurd was a strong company that was under marketed. With our new re-branding effort, Hurd emerges as a vital, energetic, contemporary company with outstanding products. Hurd is now poised to be a leader in the window and door market. Hurd was acquired by MHI in December 2004 from UIS, Inc. The company manufactures wood, aluminum-clad wood and vinyl windows and patio doors. Hurd employs over 600 people and is headquartered in Medford, WI. Manufacturing takes place in four plants in Medford and Merrill, WI. Products are distributed through more than 400 national and international distributors.

Stair Parts, Inc. was also acquired from UIS in December of 2004. Another manufacturer for custom homes, Stair Parts produces both standard and custom balusters, newels, handrails, treads, risers and staircase accessories in eight standard and 21 custom species of wood. Founded in 1978, Stair Parts operates two facilities in the Atlanta, GA area.

American Weather Seal Corporation has been part of MHI for three years. Founded in 1934, American Weather Seal produces vinyl windows for new construction and replacement. The company markets under the names: American Weather Seal, Nu-Sash, Comfortmaster and Villa. New in 2005, American Weather Seal introduced the Tru-Therm line of thermally protected aluminum windows and patio doors for light commercial and industrial markets. The Tru-Therm products are nationally certified for historic renovation applications.

Monarch Manufacturing Company, founded in 1987, manufactures windows and window accessories for new construction, remodeling and renovation markets, residential basements and foundations. Monarch is the only basement window company to provide a range of products specifically designed for poured concrete walls. Products are sold through distributors who sell concrete related products. Manufacturing facilities are located in Iowa and Colorado.
