Hurd Sees Success Despite Industry Downturns

Outlook attributed to product innovation, improved operations, foreseeing market shifts.

Medford, WI – January 19, 2010 –While the country is just beginning to pull itself out of the economic downturn and new home construction is starting to rebound, Hurd Windows and Doors, is looking at 2009 as a success. And, with the investment the company made in streamlining operations, Hurd is even more optimistic for the future.
According to HWD Acquisition President Dominic Truniger, innovative and aggressive product development is the most significant reason Hurd is experiencing positive momentum. Hurd engineers’ most recent designs include the H3™, CoreGuard™, and Transcend™ Wood Replacement Windows and Patio Doors. Introduced last year, Hurd’s H3 window design won Window & Door Magazine’s Crystal Achievement Award in 2009 as “The Most Innovative Window of the Year.” Also recently introduced is CoreGuard, a superior wood protection treatment in the window industry, which only Hurd has the technology to manufacture. And in what is sure to be a category leader, the newly introduced Transcend product line will help the company gain significant traction in the home remodeling and renovation market.
Truniger said, “Our engineering group is very special. They are a small group, but have developed some of the most innovative enhancements of recent years for the industry. Examples include CoreGuard and the award-winning H3. As an example of this team’s commitment, one of our engineers helped to design the H3 while recovering from heart surgery. These guys are a story all their own, and Hurd wouldn't be nearly as successful if it weren't for their hard work and dedication.”
Hurd Windows and Doors also recognized some opportunities in the industry slowdown in 2009. The Medford, Wisconsin based company invested money in upgrading and consolidating its facilities. Hurd associates have been aggressively recruiting and signing up new distributors, expanding its market. Some of this work helped it grow its international sales last year, as exports have grown to 12 percent of total sales.

Hurd’s Year– page 2
Hurd's adaptability and ingenuity was even recognized last year outside the window and door industry. In May, the company was the recipient of Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle’s Export Achievement Award. In October, the multi-million dollar renovation of Hurd’s manufacturing facility was recognized by Wisconsin’s Focus on Energy Program. In December, it was nominated for Wisconsin Manufacturer of the Year.

Finally, Hurd Windows and Doors had a little help from star power to help it grow last year. In September, Ed Begley, Jr. heralded Hurd and its products for green renovation projects. In October, the PBS Hit Series Hometime® even came to Hurd to film a special feature. “That’s the sort of national acknowledgment money can’t buy,” Truniger said.

“Truly, despite the odds, 2009 was a successful year for Hurd. And, 2010 is promising to be just as positive,” he concluded.
