Hurd Opens a Door (and Window) to Help those in Need

Company donated $800,000 worth of windows, services to World Vision

Medford, WI – January 19, 2010 – Recognizing that the number of people in need is on the rise -- especially as donations to charitable organizations are declining -- Hurd Windows and Doors has responded in the best way it can. The company donated nearly a million dollars in products and related services to World Vision through the Gifts-in-Kind (GIK) program within the past year.
Products donated to World Vision, or GIK, are a company's first-quality or specially-produced inventory donated to assist those in need. World Vision sorts, ships, and distributes these goods to millions of children and families in the U.S. and overseas each year. World Vision works in 100 countries, half of which have duty free status to import donations. In the past five years, World Vision has placed more than $1.5 billion worth of donated goods from major corporations, including medical supplies, school supplies, building materials, personal care items, clothing, shoes, books, and sporting goods.
In December 2009 and January 2010, Hurd donated six semi-trucks worth of its products to the GIK program. The Hurd windows, screens, and doors will help GIK upgrade the homes of a multitude of people in need. Total retail value of the product was more than $675,000, with the additional labor and transportation costs easily topping $700,000. Hurd also donated product to World Vision earlier in the year with a retail value of approximately $100,000.
The product is stored in area warehouses, and organizations, such as churches, will use the items to renovate homes in need of reparation. The donated products are all new, highly energy-efficient Hurd windows, doors, and screens that will help needy families stay warm, while dramatically cutting their energy bills.

"With their donation to World Vision, Hurd Windows & Doors will be helping an estimated 185 families in the Chicago and Appalachia (West Virginia) regions of the United States. An average family receives a combination of between 4 to 6 windows and doors that are used to refurbish their home," said World Vision Corporate Relations Director Mary Garcia.

Hurd views the partnership with World Vision as a win-win. The company donated about 75 percent of its factory outlet product, some of which was admittedly taking up space after Hurd consolidated its Merrill plants to Medford. "We are becoming a leaner, just-in-time manufacturing company. The donation allowed us to do a major house cleaning and inventory reduction, so we have a fresh start," said Hurd's Distributor Services Manager Mike Czerniak.

“Social responsibility is on the shoulders of individuals and companies alike. Considering the construction industry conditions, we were fortunate this year, and this was a grateful gesture that we could do to give thanks and lend a helping hand to people who have been not as fortunate,” said Stu Brown, Vice President of Products & Services.
